Watch a group

Updated Oct 20262 min read

A LinkedIn group gathers people around one topic, which often makes its members a well-targeted audience. A group watcher follows one group: it adds new members to a lead list, or collects the group's new posts so you can capture the people around them.

What you need

  • The Pro plan or higher. A watcher counts towards your plan's monitor limit.
  • A connected LinkedIn account. To watch a group, your account has to be a member.

Start watching

  1. Copy the group's link on LinkedIn, or find groups with keywords: type them, choose Groups and press Search once.
  2. Paste the link into New monitor: keywords or LinkedIn URL in Signals and press Watch (or watch a group from the search results). Watch group opens.
  3. Check the group's name, whether it's Public or Private, and its member count.
  4. Choose the Monitor type:
    • Members: adds new members to a lead list as they join.
    • Posts: collects new posts in the group in the watcher's feed.
  5. Choose the Poll frequency. Auto (starts frequent, slows over time) suits most groups.
  6. For Posts, choose Posts per poll (about 50, 100 or 200) and whether to Include existing posts on the first run.
  7. For Members, choose whether to find emails for the people saved.
  8. Pick a New list or an Existing list, and start the watcher. In Members mode, new members are saved to it. In Posts mode, the watcher only collects posts and saves nobody on its own.

Joining the group

  • Public group you're not in yet: your account joins it automatically so it can be watched.
  • Private group: joining needs the admins' approval. The watcher sends the request and waits; monitoring starts once you're approved. Until then the watcher shows Check membership instead of Refresh now. Approvals often come within minutes, and the watcher checks often at first.

Members mode

Each check adds everyone who joined since the last one, up to 500 per check. Existing members are worked through as well: the first run adds up to 1,000, and each later check continues through the member list.

Saving group members is free. They're saved with what the group shows (name, headline and profile link). To add more detail, use the list's enrich options later. Finding emails is 20 per email found.

Posts mode

The watcher stores the group's new posts and nothing else: they appear in the watcher's feed, with their authors and how much engagement they got. No one is added to a lead list automatically, and posts mode costs nothing. Use the feed to spot what the group is talking about. To save people, press Scrape Leads on a post: it captures the people who commented on or liked it into a list you choose.

Tips

  • Groups with tens of thousands of members take several days of checks to work through. Leave the watcher running.
  • Large, general groups bring a lot of noise. Score the list against your ICP and work on the strong fits.
  • Leave your LinkedIn account in groups you watch. Leaving the group stops the watcher from seeing new members.
