Write openers for a lead

Updated Oct 20262 min read

Openers are personalised first messages for a lead. filtrat reads the lead's profile and company, takes what you sell from your company profile and the ICP you pick, and writes three options, each with the reasoning behind it. You pick one, edit it and send it from your own tools.

What you need

  • The Growth plan or higher, or a credit pack from $25.
  • Your company set up in Targeting. Setting it up needs the Growth plan or a credit pack of the same size. The fuller the profile, the better the openers. See Set up your company profile.
  • Ideally an ICP with Why they choose you, What triggers a purchase and Customer pains filled in.

Writing openers costs no credits.

For one lead

  1. Open a lead list and click a lead to open its details.
  2. Open the Openers tab.
  3. If you have more than one company, pick the one you're writing as.
  4. Under Written for ICP, pick the ICP, or No ICP to use only what the company profile says. filtrat suggests one: the ICP the lead's post was flagged for, or the ICP the lead scores best on.
  5. Check Available context: the title, company, industry, size, headline, work experience and, for leads from a signal, Their LinkedIn post. With little context, the openers will be generic.
  6. Press Generate Openers.

You get:

  • A label for who the lead is to you: Buyer, Influencer, Partner or Skip, with a short reason.
  • Option 1, Option 2 and Option 3, each with a copy button. Open Breakdown under an option to see the role it read, the insight it uses, the pain it connects to, the pitch and the call to action.
  • For a lead who came in through a LinkedIn post: a Comment on their post option, with the DM after they react or reply.

Not quite right? Press Regenerate, or regenerate for another ICP or another company with the buttons underneath.

For a whole list

  1. In the lead list, open Add data → Generate Openers (number). The number is the leads without an opener yet. With a filter or search on, only the matching leads are included.
  2. Read the summary and press Generate.
  3. Pick the company and then the ICP (or No ICP).
  4. Keep Skip leads the ICP scored Low fit or Disqualified on to leave out poor fits. Leads not scored yet still get openers.

Openers fill in as they're ready. The Openers column shows the lead's label as a letter (B, I, P or S) and View. Click it to open the options.

Tip

Score the list first and filter to Strong fit and Partial. Openers for good fits are the ones you'll actually send.

Make them sound like you

Openers follow your company profile in Targeting:

  • Tone of voice and Winning copies (full messages that got replies): the AI matches their style.
  • What you offer first: how openers end. Without it, they offer what your pricing gives for free, or a small sample.
  • Never say: words and claims openers never use.
  • Proof: clients and results: real outcomes they can mention.

Before you send

Read every opener. Check facts about the lead's company, remove anything you can't stand behind, and keep it short. Openers are drafts, not autopilot.
