Look back, exclude words and author titles

Updated Oct 20262 min read

Keyword post monitors search all of LinkedIn, so most of the work is keeping out what you don't want. Four filters do that. Set them before you create the monitor and check the result with Search once, or change them later with Edit monitor.

Where to find them

  • New monitor: type your keywords, keep Posts selected and open Filters.
  • Existing monitor: open the monitor's menu and choose Edit monitor.

The filters

FilterWhat it does
Look backHow far back each check searches: Past 24 hours, Past week (the default) or Past month
Exclude words…Posts with these words aren't searched for
Author titles…Keeps only posts whose author's headline names one of these titles. CEO also matches Chief Executive Officer
Exclude titles…Leaves out posts whose author's headline names one of these titles

Type a value and press Enter to add it. Each filter takes several values.

Look back

Each check searches posts from the period you choose. Past week suits most monitors that check a few times a day. Choose Past 24 hours for busy keywords where only fresh posts matter, and Past month for rare keywords where you'd otherwise see nothing.

If a monitor finds no posts, the Signals tab offers Widen the date range.

Exclude words

Use it for the meanings of your keyword you don't want. Watching "cold email"? Exclude template, giveaway or course to drop posts selling cold email courses. Excluded words are left out of the search itself.

Author titles

Author titles are matched on the author's headline, so they filter by who is posting, not what the post says:

  • Author titles: Founder, CEO, Head of Sales keeps the posts of the people you sell to.
  • Exclude titles: Recruiter, Student, Consultant drops voices that rarely buy.

Posts from authors outside your titles aren't deleted. They're kept in the monitor's feed, marked Hidden by the author filter, and aren't judged as signals. A line such as 12 hidden by author filter · Show lets you see them. Changing the author titles later hides or shows posts the monitor already has.

Tip

Headlines are free text. Add the variants people use: Founder, Co-founder, Owner. Common abbreviations such as CEO also match the full title.

Keywords

On the keywords themselves:

  • Put a phrase in quotes, like "cold email", to match it exactly. Click a keyword chip to switch between exact phrase and words anywhere.
  • Paste a comma-separated list to add several at once.
  • Fewer, more specific keywords beat many broad ones.

Filters vs ICP match

Filters run before a post is judged and decide which posts the monitor reads at all. ICP authors only on the Signals tab is a view filter after judging: it shows only signals whose author matches the monitor's ICP, judged from their headline. See ICP match on post authors.

Saved keyword changes apply from the next check.
