Read a domain report

Updated Oct 20262 min read

A domain report shows how a company receives email: who hosts its mailboxes, whether a security filter sits in front of them, whether the domain accepts any address, and how its email authentication is set up. Inspecting domains is always free.

Use it before you verify or find emails at a company you care about, to understand a batch of risky or catch-all results, or to size up a list of target domains.

Inspect domains

  1. Open Domain intel and stay on the Inspect tab.
  2. Type a domain and press Enter, or paste several separated by commas. Each one becomes a chip; Clear all removes them.
  3. To load domains from a file, upload a CSV, Excel or TXT file, pick the column in Map domain column, and press Load domains.
  4. Press Inspect, or Inspect (N) for several.

You can inspect up to 500 domains at once. Website addresses are reduced to their domain.

With one domain, the report opens right away. With several, filtrat inspects them all and switches to the History tab, where each domain is a row.

What the report shows

FieldWhat it means
MX providerThe service that receives mail for the domain, as published in its DNS.
Gateway detectedA security gateway that filters mail before it reaches the mailboxes, or None detected. Gateways are common at larger companies and filter cold email strictly.
Real provider (SPF/DKIM)Who actually hosts the mailboxes, such as Google Workspace or Microsoft 365, read from the domain's email authentication records. Useful when a gateway hides it.
Catch-all domainYes if the domain accepts mail for any address. See What is a catch-all domain?
MX recordsThe mail servers, with their priority.
SPFWhich servers may send mail for the domain, or Not configured.
DMARCThe domain's policy for mail that fails authentication, or Not configured.
Email patternHow the company formats addresses, when known. See Look up a domain's email pattern.

The same information appears in the Domain intelligence panel of a single verification, together with the Deliverability Index. See The deliverability index.

How to use it

  • Catch-all: Yes. Plain verification can't confirm addresses here. Plan to resolve the important ones, or turn on catch-all resolution in the finder.
  • A gateway is detected. Expect strict filtering of cold email. Send from a warmed-up domain with SPF, DKIM and DMARC in place, and keep volumes low.
  • SPF or DMARC not configured. This describes the company's own setup. It doesn't stop you from emailing them, but it often goes with a small or loosely managed mail setup.
  • No MX records. The domain doesn't receive email. Look for the company's real email domain; the finder can do this when you add the company name.

The History tab

History lists every domain you've inspected. Use Search domains… to find one, filter by catch-all, and choose columns: Domain, MX provider, Gateway, Real provider, Catch-all, SPF, DMARC, Patterns and Inspected. Export (N) downloads the rows as a CSV.

What it costs

Inspecting domains is free, however many you check. Only an email pattern search costs credits: 15 per domain, when a pattern is found.
